Rudolf Haym (born October 5, 1821 in Grünberg , † August 27, 1901 in St. Anton am Arlberg ) was a philosopher and publicist.

Live and act

From 1839 to 1843 Haym studied Protestant theology, philosophy and classical philology in Halle and Berlin. In Halle he became a member of the old Halle fraternity in 1839 . In 1843 he was promoted to Dr. phil. doctorate , the Habilitation was refused by the Prussian government in 1845.

Rudolf Haym was an MP for Eisleben in the Frankfurt National Assembly , a participant in the Gotha post-parliament and from 1866 a member of the Prussian House of Representatives . He was one of Bismarck's supporters .

From 1868 Haym was a full professor of German literature at the University of Halle . In 1873/74 he became rector of the Halle Alma Mater .

Haym was one of the most important literary scholars of his time. His biography of Schopenhauer (1864) was highly controversial . The main works are Hegel and his time (1857), The romantic school (1870) and an extensive biography of Herder ( Herder. Illustrated after his life and works , 2 volumes, 1880/1885 - according to Hans Georg Gadamer, “a masterpiece of biographical research "). They have all appeared in reprints and are still considered standard works today.

In 1900 he was accepted as a foreign member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences .
