Philippe Mestre
Philippe Mestre (born August 23, 1927 in Talmont-Saint-Hilaire , Département Vendée ; † April 25, 2017 ) was a French politician and writer .
Live and act
Philippe Mestre is the nephew of the politician Pierre-Olivier Lapie (1901–1994). He studied at the École nationale de la France d'Outre-Mer and was able to successfully complete this degree in 1951. Immediately thereafter, Mestre got a job in the colonial administration of French Equatorial Africa . In the following year he switched to the administrative staff of French Congo and held various offices there until 1960.
In 1960, under President Charles de Gaulle , he was appointed to the sous-préfet of Cassaigne - today Sidi Ali in the province of Mostaganem - in Algeria . After independence, Mestre held numerous positions in the French state administration, including a. as prefect of various departments. In 1978 he became head of Prime Minister Raymond Barre's cabinet .
From 1981 to 1993 Mestre represented the Département Vendée as a member of parliament. As such, he also acted as President-directeur général of the daily Presse-Océan .
In the government of Édouard Balladur Mestre was between March 30, 1993 and May 11, 1995 Minister of War Veterans ( Ministre des Anciens combattants et Victimes de guerre ). He was a member of the Union pour la Nouvelle République (UNR), later of the Union pour la democratie française (UDF).
In parallel to his political work, Mestre was also able to publish a number of novels that were praised by the public as well as literary critics.
