Les Essarts is a former French commune with 5,511 inhabitants (as of January 1 2017) in the department of Vendée in the region of Pays de la Loire . It belonged to the arrondissement of La Roche-sur-Yon and the canton of Chantonnay (until 2015: canton Les Essarts ).
With effect from January 1, 2016, the communes of Sainte-Florence , Boulogne , L'Oie and Les Essarts were merged into a commune nouvelle called Essarts en Bocage .

Historical sights are a crypt from the 12th century , the Château des Essarts and the Roman entrance portal of the old church St-Pierre d'Essarts .
A fortress was built from wood in the 9th century on the site of today's castle , which was then expanded in stone in the 12th century. In the 15th century the gate area was renewed and reinforced with watchtowers. Nearby is a tumulus from the Gallo-Roman period.
