Fabian Wegmann (born June 20, 1980 in Münster ) is a former German racing cyclist .

Athletic career

In 2001 Fabian Wegmann, whose brother Christian Wegmann was also a professional cyclist, became the German U23 road champion. In 2002 he started his elite career with the German team Gerolsteiner . In 2004 , he became the first German ever to win the green jersey of the best climber at the Giro d'Italia . At the German championship before the start of the Tour de France in Freiburg im Breisgau , he finished third. In 2004 he also took part in the Tour de France for the first time .

In May 2005 Wegmann was third in the overall individual ranking of the Rhineland-Palatinate Tour . In June he won the Black Forest GP , one of the most difficult German one-day races, and took third place in a difficult mountain stage of the Tour de Suisse . On the seventh stage of the Tour de France to Karlsruhe, after a 150-kilometer solo escape, he won the dotted jersey and the red number on the most combative rider. He expanded his list of victories in 2005 with successes at the Grand Prix of San Francisco and a stage win at the Tour of Poland , through which he earned his first ProTour points. He was the first German to keep a video diary for the Deutschland Tour 2005 , in which he gave insights into the everyday work of a cyclist. He was named Sportsman of the Year by the Sports Association of the City of Münster at the Ball des Sports 2005 .

2006 was also a successful year for Wegmann: He won the Spanish one-day race GP Miguel Indurain and the first stage of the Dauphiné Libéré , after which he rode in the yellow jersey for one day. He was also the first German to make it onto the podium of the Giro di Lombardia with a third place . After George Hincapie's disqualification , Wegmann is also the stage winner of the fifth stage of the California Tour . He also wore the dotted jersey for one day on the 2006 tour.

Wegmann remained in the service of Team Gerolsteiner until its dissolution at the end of 2008 after the main sponsor Gerolsteiner had withdrawn. For the 2009 season he moved to the German team Milram . After the team was dissolved at the end of the season, Wegmann signed a two-year contract with the newly founded Luxembourg racing team Leopard Trek in October 2010 . In 2012 Wegmann moved to the Garmin-Cervélo team and became German road cycling champion in Grimma .

In December 2016, Fabian Wegmann announced his resignation at the end of the season.

Professional

After retiring from active cycling, Wegmann held various positions in cycling. He works as race director for various races such as the Sparkassen Münsterland GIRO in his hometown, for Eschborn-Frankfurt and for the Deutschland Tour as well as a television commentator.
