Bernd Gröne

Bernd Gröne (born February 19, 1963 in Recklinghausen ) is a former German professional cyclist.

Athletic career

He achieved outstanding victories among the amateurs in 1987 at the Grand Prix of the Wine Road and internationally in the extremely strong Gran Premio della Liberazione race in Italy. At the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul , he won the silver medal in the road race over 196.8 km behind Olaf Ludwig with a time of 4:32:25 h . He was also German champion in the amateurs road race in 1988 and repeated this success in 1993 with the professionals.

In 1989 he became a professional driver for the German team in Stuttgart . Until 1995 he drove for the Telekom team .

In the course of the discovery of doping in the 1990s in May 2007, he made the following comments:

“I was also offered Epo in 1995 by Belgian supervisors. I then found out from our Freiburg doctors what consequential damage could occur. When they explained to me that it was far from clear what the long-term consequences Epo could have, I kept my hands off it. Basically, I'm now the stupid man who only climbed the mountains on the tour with what he had in his legs and was sorted out in 1995 because he was no longer good enough. No wonder if the others doped. "

Honors

For winning the silver medal at the Olympic Games in 1988 he received - like all German medalists - the silver laurel leaf.

Professional

Bernd Gröne completed an apprenticeship as a gas-water installer.
