Volker Kassun
Volker Kassun (born February 21, 1953 in Harburg ) is a former German cyclist and national champion in cycling .
Athletic career
Kassun competed in his races for the Berlin club RC Charlottenburg , to which he had switched in preparation for the 1980 Olympic Games . At the Spanish training camp, he and his teammates received the news that Germany had joined the boycott of the games in Moscow . He started cycling at RV Elbe Harburg. His first nomination for the national team of the Federation of German Cyclists (BDR) was in 1975 when he was appointed to the team for the International Peace Tour. He finished the race in 62nd place. A year later, he won his first national title. His team won the championship race in the team time trial . In 1978, the line-up of Kassun, Olaf Paltian , Rainer and Karsten Podlesch won the title again. Other outstanding victories were winning the Berlin stage trip in 1978 and the Rund um Berlin race in 1979, which the Berlin Cycling Association organized as an inner-city alternative to the Rund um Berlin race (which took place in the GDR ). In 1979 Kassun also took part in the UCI Road World Championships and finished 28th in the individual race.
