Peter Weibel (cyclist)

Peter Weibel (born September 14, 1950 in Hockenheim ; † August 9, 2017 ) was a German racing cyclist and trainer .

Athletic career

Weibel began his career at RC Chio Mannheim . His greatest success as a cyclist was winning the Rhineland-Palatinate Tour in 1973. At the UCI Road World Championships in 1974 in Montreal , he was fifth in the amateurs' road race and fourth in the team time trial with Friedrich at the 1976 Olympic Games , also in Montreal by Loeffelholz , Olaf Paltian and Hans-Peter Jakst . During the International Peace Trip in 1975 , he was the first German to win a stage.

Trainer

After his active time, Weibel was a trainer at the Association of German Cyclists (BDR). In his time the gold medal was the road quad at the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona and the World Champion title of Jan Ullrich 1993. After the separation was repealed by professionals and amateurs, Weibel was responsible for the U23 riders.

In 2007 Weibel was suspended by the BDR on doping allegations, and his contract expired in 2009. In August 2017 Peter Weibel succumbed to cancer.
