Mario Hernig (born December 3, 1959 in Karl-Marx-Stadt ) is a former German racing cyclist .

Athletic career

Mario Hernig, who competed for SC Karl-Marx-Stadt , was a specialist in single and team tracking on the track and was one of the dominant racing drivers in the GDR in these disciplines from the late 1970s to the 1980s . In the team pursuit he was GDR champion five times, in the single pursuit twice, in 1984 and 1985. At the UCI track world championships in 1982 in Leicester , he took third place in each of the two pursuit races, in the team together with Detlef Macha , Gerald Buder and Volker Winkler . He celebrated his first major international success on the road in May 1982 in Italy by winning the Tour of Campania. In 1983, Hernig also won the road races Thuringia Tour , Olympia's Tour and Tour du Loir-et-Cher and in 1985 the Oder Tour and the Circuit des Ardennes . On the Werner-Seelenbinder-Halle track in Berlin, he won the "International Two-Team Championship" in 1981 with Steffen Stier as a partner.

In 1986, Hernig took second place in the overall ranking of the West German Lower Saxony Tour . During the border control, an oil radiator that he had bought with his premium was discovered and the GDR Association banned it for a quarter of a year. Attempts to become a member of the GDR election again failed. But he kept fit with football and as a cycling coach at BSG Lok Zwickau . In October 1989 he fled to the West via Hungary.

After 1989, Hernig was still successful as a road racing driver. In 1990 he was the winner in the Bundesliga individual competition, and in 1991 he won the Ronde de l'Isard d'Ariege and the German Hillclimb Championship and the HRC Hannover the championship in the team time trial .
