Erich Bautz

Erich Bautz (born May 26, 1913 in Dortmund ; † September 17, 1986 there ) was a German racing cyclist .

Athletic career

His success as a youth driver enabled him to immediately move up to the amateur class, he started straight away in the A class. In the course of his career as a professional driver , which lasted from 1934 with the interruption of the Second World War until 1952, he achieved a total of 27 victories. He contested his first professional race in the spring of 1934. After his later memories, the Berlin – Cottbus – Berlin race stuck in his mind, because it made "all the mistakes one could make as a young professional"; he crossed the finish line an hour behind the winner Paul Kroll and "had learned a lot". In 1936 he won three of the most important German road races of his time: Around Cologne , Around the Hainleite and the Saarland Tour .

His most successful year was undoubtedly 1937, when he not only won the Harz Tour , but also wore the yellow jersey at the Tour de France as the second German after Kurt Stöpel . He won two stages and finished ninth in the overall standings. In 1935 he achieved his best placement at the UCI Road World Championships . Behind the winner Jean Aerts from Belgium , he finished sixth and thus also the best German.

In 1947 he won the Green Ribbon from the Rhine . The tour was a predecessor of today's Germany tour . In addition, he was German road master in 1937, 1941 and 1950, and German standing master in 1942 and 1950 .

Professional

After his career, Bautz ran a bicycle shop and a restaurant in Dortmund.
