Josef "Jupp" Merkens (born October 6, 1903 in Cologne ; † June 26, 1981 there ) was a German cyclist and pacemaker .

From 1920 to 1927 Merkens was active as an amateur cyclist, initially for the "RC Flottweg Cologne" and from 1923 for the "RC Adler Cologne". Through his friend, the Cologne racing cyclist Paul Krewer , Merkens got into standing sport . In 1934 he passed his exam at the pacemaker and standing school in Wuppertal-Elberfeld and then headed a standing school in Cologne. From then on, he led numerous prominent German stayers as a pacemaker such as Walter Lohmann , Adolf Schön , Erich Metze , Gustav Kilian , Jean Schorn , Erich Bautz , Otto Ziege as well as his own brother, the sprint Olympic champion of 1936, Toni Merkens , who after the Olympic Games had become a professional and then mainly denied the more lucrative standing races.

With Adolf Schön, Merkens became German champion in Frankfurt in 1937 and third in the world championship in Copenhagen . In 1941 Lohmann became German champion behind Merkens, Bautz in 1942 and 1950 and Schorn in 1947. In 1953 Merkens became German vice-champion together with Otto Ziege from Berlin.
