Karl Wittig (born November 11, 1890 in Berlin ; † September 4, 1958 there ) was a German racing cyclist .
He started out as a motorcyclist and then competed in standing races before turning to road cycling. Karl Wittig was one of the most successful German road drivers before the First World War , along with Jean Rosellen and Erich Aberger . In 1910 he became German road racing champion; in the same year he won Rund um Köln . In 1912 he won the Austrian race around the glaciers and in 1915 around Berlin . When he won the race around the glaciers , he was arrested shortly after reaching the finish line and sent to prison. He was accused of running over a man on the route. Only after the intervention of the Tyrolean Cyclists Association , which had found the culprit, was he released the next day and was able to receive his award.
After the war, Wittig, who had previously contested a few six-day races, turned to the standing sport . In this discipline he was three times (1920, 1921 and 1926) German champion and won the bronze medal at the UCI track world championships in Zurich in 1923 .
