Richard Scheuermann (born December 29, 1876 in Neumarkt near Breslau ; † September 8, 1913 in Cologne ) was a German pioneer of professional cycling .

Life

After an apprenticeship as a tailor , Richard Scheuermann completed a two-year military service. From 1896 he drove his first bike races as an amateur . After several victories and prizes, he decided in 1899 to become a professional cyclist . Scheuermann specialized in the two categories of flying and standing races , but was also a sought-after partner for tandem riding . At the age of 28, contemporary cycling chroniclers described him as a “veteran of the racecourse ”. In terms of income, he was ranked third among the most successful German long-term drivers at home and abroad. Scheuermann died in 1913 after a fall on September 7, 1913 in a race with world champion Paul Guignard at the Riehler Rennbahn in Cologne. Guignard's pacemaker Gus Lawson was also killed in this fall ; Scheuermann's pacemaker Emil Meinhold was critically injured. Richard Scheuermann was buried on September 13th in the Pohlanowitz cemetery in Breslau .
