Robert Förstemann (born March 5, 1986 in Greiz ) is a German track cyclist who specializes in short-term disciplines. His particular strength was the team sprint , he also started in the sprint and 1000 meter time trial disciplines . He has been a pilot in paracycling since 2019 .
Cycling career
Track cycling
Robert Förstemann started competitive cycling at the age of 15. He already achieved numerous successes in the youth and junior class. At his first national championships in 2002, he won the bronze medal in the sprint . In 2004 he became Junior World Champion in the team sprint in Los Angeles .
From 2005 Förstemann belonged to the German national track team and from 2006 took part in all track cycling world championships . In 2010 , 2013 and 2016 he was European champion in the team sprint.
In 2010 Robert Förstemann became world champion in the team sprint together with Maximilian Levy and Stefan Nimke . At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , he won the bronze medal in the team sprint together with Maximilian Levy and René Enders . Förstemann was only intended as a substitute for this competition; due to an injury to Stefan Nimke, he was briefly used in the race. In the sprint, he finished seventh.
After Förstemann had missed the qualification for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , he announced a break of several months and ended the cooperation with his previous trainer Emanuel Raasch .
In two races of the Track Cycling World Cup , Förstemann won the team sprint, in Cali with Max Niederlag , Eric Engler and Maximilian Dörnbach , in Manchester with Maximilian Levy and Joachim Eilers . At the European Railway Championships in Berlin Förstemann, Maximilian Levy and Joachim Eilers won the silver medal.
In January 2019, Robert Förstemann fell in the Bremen six-day race ; he broke three ribs, one collarbone and suffered cuts on his face. He needed an operation. The reason for the fall was apparently a defect on the front wheel.
Paracycling
On December 31, 2018, Förstemann left the Association of German Cyclists and will in future be a pilot in tandem races for the German Disabled Sports Association . His first start was at the UCI Paracycling World Track Championships 2019 in Apeldoorn as a pilot for the visually impaired athlete Kai Kruse . In the 1000 meter time trial, the duo finished seventh. At the World Championships the following year, the duo won their first international medal together with bronze.
Records
Robert Förstemann set a German record over the 200 meter distance (flying start) on May 28, 2010, on the occasion of the "Grand Prix of Sprinters - Alexander Lesnikov Memorial" on the Olympic track in Moscow-Krylatskoje (9.893 s) and improved it in the same place on May 29, 2011 (9.814 s). On June 24, 2012 Robert Förstemann achieved a time of 9.652 s at the US Grand Prix of Sprinting in Colorado Springs. In qualifying for the sprint tournament of the second run of the International Sparkasse Sprinter Cup on June 23, 2013 in Cottbus, Robert Förstemann also set a new flat track world record in a time of 9.790 seconds.
Robert Förstemann held several track records. On July 9, 2011, he improved at the German track championships, for example. B. the twelve-year-old track record in the Berlin Velodrome of 10.026 s, which Jens Fiedler (10.069 s) had previously held. He was the track record holder in Colorado, Valencia, Glasgow, Cottbus, Tula, Oberhausen, Vienna and Apeldoorn.
In December 2013 Förstemann won the team sprint together with René Enders and Joachim Eilers in the second run of the Track Cycling World Cup 2013/2014 ; In the qualification the three athletes drove a new world record with 41.871 seconds . The trio improved the old record of 42,600 seconds set by the British team at the 2012 Olympic Games in London .
Clubs and coaches
Förstemanns Heimatverein has been SSV Gera 1990 since 2001 . From 2004 he started for the "Sprintteam Stadtwerke Erfurt " and the "XXL natural gas team"; from 2009 to 2012 for the natural gas team . 2012 . Since April 2012 he starts exclusively for his home club. Until 2005 he was a high school student at the Elite School of Sports Pierre-de-Coubertin-Gymnasium in Erfurt and has been a police officer with the Federal Police since 2009 . Förstemann was trained by Jörg Uwe Krünägel and Emanuel Raasch from 2006 ; former coaches were Wolf-Dieter Lampke (2001/2002), Andreas Wartenberg (2002), Gerald Mortag (2002/2003) and Jochen Wilhelm (2003 to 2006).
Honors
In 2008 Förstemann was awarded the silver medal of the city of Gera ; In 2009 and 2010 he received the gold badge of honor. On November 7, 2012, Federal President Joachim Gauck presented him with the Silver Laurel Leaf , the highest state award for top performance in German sport.
Private
Robert Förstemann married in June 2011 and has had a son since 2013, and a second son was born in 2017.
His thighs, which are 73 centimeters in circumference, attract special attention. He claims to have a congenital malfunction of the protein myostatin , which would normally inhibit muscle growth.
