Karl-Heinz Kunde (born January 6, 1938 in Cologne ; † January 15, 2018 ) was a German racing cyclist who was known as a climbing specialist and was therefore nicknamed "Bergfloh". In the 1966 Tour de France , he wore the yellow jersey for five days .

Athletic career

The 1.59 meter tall Karl-Heinz Kunde began his cycling career in the men's field in 1959. That year he had his best result with fourth place in the German road championship . In 1960 he first drew national attention at the Tour of Austria , won a stage and, as the best German, was seventh in the overall ranking. He won his first men's championship title in 1961 when he won the German amateur road championship. In the same year he also took part in the Tour de l'Avenir , which he also finished in fourth place as the best German. He had less success at the UCI Road World Championship , where he was eliminated after two rounds. He was also eliminated from the 1961 World Championship race.

With a contract with the German cycling team Afri-Cola-Rabeneick , Kunde moved to the professional paddock in 1962 . His first victory in the professional rider's camp was on January 27, 1962 in a cyclo-cross race in Cologne. After a year without any sporting highlights, he celebrated winning the German mountain championship in 1963 . He repeated this success again in 1970. In the Tour of Luxembourg in 1963 he won a stage, but was only 14th in the overall standings. In the Belgian one-day race Flèche Wallonne he was 41.

In 1964 he took part in the major cycling events Road World Championship and Tour de France . While he retired early at the World Cup, he came in 16th place on his tour debut . The road world championships brought little luck to customers. He competed eight times, but could only place twice. In 1965 he was fifth, in 1968 thirteenth. Kunde took part in the Tour de France six times, retired twice early and had the best result in the 1966 Tour de France with ninth place when he wore the yellow jersey for five days .

At the Giro d'Italia , which is also one of the classic tours , Kunde only appeared in the final ranking in 1968 when he finished 24th. On the other hand, he had four placements in the Tour de Suisse between 1968 and 1972; tenth place in 1968 was the best result. In the last years of his career, Kunde participated in three of the four spring classics: 1972 Liège – Bastogne – Liège (25th), 1973 Paris – Roubaix (19th) and Milan – Sanremo 1973 (86th).

In addition to his road cycling activities, Kunde also went on trips to cross-country sports . Among other things, he started at the Cyclo-cross World Championships in 1969 and 1972, where he finished 18 and 21. At the West German cross-country championships between 1969 and 1973 he took two second and one third place. Kunde also demonstrated his versatility by starting several six-day races .

After the 1973 season in the German HA-RO team, Kunde ended his cycling career and opened a specialist cycling shop in Cologne. He died in a hospital in January 2018 a few days after his 80th birthday.
