Gran Premio della Liberazione

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Gran Premio della Liberazione (German: Great Price of Liberation ) is an Italian cycling race that has been held every April 25th since 1946 on a circuit at the Caracalla Baths in Rome .

meaning

The name and the date of the race refer to the Italian national holiday Anniversario della Liberazione (Eng .: Anniversary of the Liberation), on which the Italian Republic celebrates the liberation from fascism in 1945.

This symbolic meaning of the race exceeds the formal sporting value. The race, which was reserved for amateurs until 2004 and has been held as a U23 junior race in UCI category 1.2U since the introduction of the standard license in 2005 , is broadcast live on the Italian state television RAI , like otherwise only professional races .

Among the winners of the race are numerous riders who were later very successful in international cycling, e.g. the later winner of the Giro d'Italia and two-time road world champion Gianni Bugno in 1985 or the winner of Milan – Sanremo 2011 , Mathew Goss , who won here in 2006 .

The length of the race in 2012 was 138 km. It was held on a circuit of approx. 6 km. This makes it a circuit race .

The organizer is the Velo Club Primavera Ciclistica , which also organized the Giro delle Regioni junior stage race .

The race should not be confused with the women's race Gran Premio della Liberazione Donne , which also took place annually on Liberation Day, but, unlike the men's race, was held in the Lombardy Crema until 2012 . The winner of the 2011 event was the two-time road world champion Giorgia Bronzini . Bronzini was already able to win in 2007 and 2009, making it the record winner. She was followed by the German Regina Schleicher , who won in 2005 and 2008. In 2013 the race was canceled. The tradition was resumed in 2016 and the race was held at the site of the men's race under the name Gran Premio della Liberazione . The first winner of the new edition was Marta Bastianelli .
