Romeo Venturelli (born December 9, 1938 in Lama Mocogno , † April 2, 2011 in Pavullo nel Frignano ) was an Italian cyclist .

Athletic career

As an amateur he won the Giro de Lombardia for amateurs. He started twice in the International Peace Tour . After retiring from the race in 1958, he was third overall in 1959 , won three stages and wore the yellow jersey for three stages. Romeo Venturelli was considered the greatest talent among the Italian amateurs of his time. Fausto Coppi therefore brought him into his San Pellegrino team , whose sporting director was Gino Bartali . Venturelli's victory in the individual time trial of the Giro d'Italia in 1960 caused a sensation . It was the first Giro after the war without Coppi, who had died of malaria in January of that year . Venturelli was the team's new hope and took over Maglia Rosa for one day after the time trial . However, he could not fulfill the hopes placed on him and ended his cycling career just five years later. The reason was that he had a naive character and couldn't find his way around the world of professional cycling.

Venturelli died in 2011 at the age of 72 years to cancer after many years of working with asbestos had come into contact.
