Eschborn – Frankfurt
Eschborn – Frankfurt is a road bike race that, along with the Cyclassics in Hamburg and around Cologne, is one of the most important German one-day races . It has been held annually in the Rhine-Main area since 1962 . The event has been held on May 1st since 1968 . In addition to the elite race and the races in the junior classes, the supporting program also includes everyone's races and the inline skating competition Rhein-Main Skate-Challenge .
history
The race was initially organized under the name Rund um den Henninger-Turm by the Henninger Brewery and the Society for the Promotion of Cycling (founded in 1961 by the brothers Hermann and Erwin Moos).
The start and finish were initially on Hainer Weg in the Sachsenhausen district of Frankfurt near the Henninger Tower .
Until 1996, when the UCI redesigned the sports teams, an amateur race took place parallel to the professional race. Since then, a U23 race has been organized. In the 1966 race, the target photo technology, which had been requested by several foreign teams , was used for the first time .
Often there were also women's races, youth races and tandem races with blind people.
After the Binding brewery took over Henninger, the start and finish were relocated to the gates of the Binding brewery in Darmstädter Landstrasse, which is also in Sachsenhausen. The race ended at both destinations after a finish lap of approx. 5 km around the Henninger tower that had to be passed several times.
After the death of the two brothers (Erwin Moos died in autumn 2002, Hermann Moos in November 2004), Hermann Moos' son, Bernd Moos-Achenbach, continued the business of the Society for the Promotion of Cycling in the interests of his father and uncle.
After the previous main sponsor had withdrawn, the 2009 race took place under the name Eschborn-Frankfurt City Loop . The starting point was in Eschborn , the destination was in the Frankfurt settlement of Riedberg . The route through the Taunus remained.
In December 2009 the race was renamed again around the financial center Eschborn – Frankfurt . Since then, the race has led from Eschborn to the Alte Oper in Frankfurt, where target laps are completed on a four-kilometer circuit.
In 2015, the police canceled the race for security reasons after a Salafist couple under police surveillance was seen spying on the race track. The police seized weapons and explosives during the subsequent home search.
For the 2017 season, the race was included in the UCI WorldTour calendar starting with the 2017 season under the name Eschborn – Frankfurt “All about the financial center” . In January 2017, the race was organizing society for the promotion of cycling by the Tour de France tour operators Amaury Sport Organization adopted (ASO). In the run-up to the 2018 event, the race was renamed Eschborn-Frankfurt .
The race planned for May 1, 2020 was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic in Germany . The organizers checked with the responsible authorities and the world cycling association UCI the possibility of a postponement to a later date in September or October of the year. In June 2020 the event was finally canceled because it was not guaranteed.
The record winner of the race is the Norwegian Alexander Kristoff (2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018) with four successes.
