Gazprom RusVelo is a Russian cycling team based in the Swiss Lugano .

The team was licensed as a UCI Professional Continental Team when it was founded in 2012 . The license applied for for 2012 was initially refused, but was granted on January 9, 2013.

organization

Team Manager was initially Heiko Salzwedel , who by the team managers Oleg Grischkin , Egon van Kessel , Henk Vogels and Vyacheslav Ekimov , the coach Andreas Lang and the former head of Team Wiesenhof Raphael Schweda was supported in a Management function. After Hans-Michael Holczer was replaced as manager of the Russian Katyusha team , Salzwedel was also replaced at Rusvelo on October 1, 2012 by the former Russian professional Renat Chamidulin and the team was given national management.

In some cases, the team is assumed to have close relationships with the Katjuscha team, whereas the former team manager Salzwedel points out that both projects are completely independent of each other in terms of organization and financing. However, according to the internet service radsport-news.com , the RusVelo teams are part of the Russian Global Cycling Project initiated by the Russian cycling association, which includes the Katyusha team.

The RusVelo teams were sponsored by Novikombank, Gazprombank , Sberbank and the Transneft pipeline group . Gazprombank is a subsidiary of Gazprom , one of the main sponsors of the Katyusha team. Gazprom took on the name sponsorship for the 2016 season. In 2017, X-Technology Swiss Research & Development became the official sponsor of the team kit, after underwear and socks had already been provided.

Moreover, in the UCI under the name RusVelo a track team as a UCI track team registered. This corresponds to the intention of the project mentioned by Salzwedel, which primarily focuses on former and current top-class track riders and stated that the main goals of the 2012 season would be a successful performance of the riders in the track world championships , the Olympic cycling competitions and the team time trial of the road world championships .

The RusVelo project also includes a women 's team of the same name , which is registered as the UCI Women's Team . Hanka Kupfernagel and Olga Sabelinskaja were introduced as prominent drivers for this team .

doping

In 2013 the team joined the Mouvement Pour un Cyclisme Crédible (MPCC). After the three drivers Andrei Solomennikow , Roman Maikin and Artjom Owetschkin tested positive for the doping agent Fenoterol after the Russian championships at the end of June 2013 , the team declared that, in accordance with the self-commitment of the MPCC teams, it would no longer participate in racing for four weeks. Team member Waleri Kaikow was previously tested for the prohibited substance GW501516 in March 2013 . The former team manager Salzwedel attributed these four doping cases within one season to the fact that the new management no longer had any influence on the drivers.
