East German Swimming Championships 1979
The GDR swimming championships were held for the 30th time in 1979 and took place from August 2nd to 5th in Brandenburg an der Havel in the Volksbad am Marienberg , where the champions were determined on 29 courses (15 men / 14 women). It was also the last championships in an open water pool. With ten titles, SC Dynamo Berlin was the most successful team and with Detlev Grabs and Barbara Krause , who won four titles just like Jörg Walter from SC Turbine Erfurt , the most successful athletes of this championship.
The sporting highlights of the championship were Petra Schneider's European record over 200 meters, as well as Jörg Woithe's GDR records over 100 meters freestyle and Rainer Strohbach over 800 and 1500 meters freestyle. Furthermore, the men's relay from SC Dynamo Berlin set a new GDR record for club relays in the 4 × 100 meter freestyle.
