After the closure of the old communal swimming pool in the listed welfare forum in Kanalstrasse was foreseeable in the 1990s due to dilapidation and excessive financial outlay for a possible renovation and since there were no other swimming opportunities in Brandenburg an der Havel outside of the summer months, a decision was made to fundamentally rebuild the Volksbad. For example, the facility was expanded to include a modern, covered swimming pool area with a water slide and an enlarged sauna area . The competition pool was provided with a mobile so-called convertible roof, so that sports and swimming in an indoor swimming pool were possible in winter and in an outdoor pool in warm summer months. The facility, renamed Marienbad Brandenburg, was opened in 2000.

Furthermore, the swimming pool was also sports venue of competitive sports . For example, on January 27th, 2009 in the large indoor swimming pool of the Marienbad there was an international match between the German national water polo team against the Olympic champion Hungary, which the Hungarians won 4: 9. Several Brandenburg clubs use Marienbad for training and competition purposes. These are, for example, the ASC Brandenburg , whose water polo players played in the German Water Polo League , the highest German league, and SV Wasserfreunde Brandenburg .
