The German Water Polo League ( DWL ) is the highest German league for the team sport water polo , with the winner being the German men's or women's champions . The DWL is a self-organized division of the Bundesliga clubs within the German Swimming Association .

organization

The Bundesliga as a division to determine the German water polo champions was introduced in 1970 for men and in 1998 for women. DWL was founded as an organization in 1997. The current chairman has been the former national player Sören Mackeben since 2017 . Sports journalist Wolfgang Philipps has been the press spokesman since 2004.

The game mode

Since the 2006/07 season it has been played in a 16-player league.

The first phase is played in two groups of 8 (group A and group B). Within the group everyone-against-everyone is played back and forth. So each team has 14 games. After the end of the first phase, there is a table with placements in each group. The first four teams in Group A are directly qualified for the quarter-finals and cannot be relegated this season. The last four teams in Group B only play against relegation again in the play-downs.

After the group stage, in the pre-play-offs, the last four teams in Group A will play against the first four teams in Group B (A5 against B4, A6 against B3, A7 against B2 and A8 against B1). So there is the possibility of going up and down within the two groups. The winners occupy the places of the teams from group A and are qualified for the quarter-finals, the losers occupy the places of the teams from group B and play against relegation.

In the last phase, the master, the relegated team (2) and the final placements are played out in a play-off mode. This is done according to the following system: the first placed in the group phase plays against the eighth placed in his group, the second against the seventh, the third against the sixth, etc.

In Group A, the winners of the first play-off phase play another play-off series and thus determine the champions. The season is over for the losers. In group B, the losers of the so-called play-down games continue to play to determine who are relegated. The season is over for the winners. The two last-placed teams that lose in the last play-down games are automatically relegated to the respective 2nd division of their national association.

Climbers

The two promoted players will be played in the DWL promotion tournament. In this everyone-against-everyone tournament, the champions of the 2nd leagues or, if a second team from the DWL has become champions, the next eligible team, compete against each other. So there are four teams. These champions or teams eligible for promotion come from the 2nd division North, East, South and West.

groups

Since the 2008/09 season there are no more upstream groups of four.
