Swimming club Poseidon Hamburg e. V. is the name of a swimming club with over 1,000 members that was created in 1948 from the merger of the Altonaer swimming club 1910 , Ottensener swimming club 1909 and Eimsbüttel medical swimming club in 1895 . This makes it one of the largest swimming clubs in northern Germany. The association operates its own outdoor swimming pool in Hamburg-Eidelstedt , which is also used as a venue for competitions. With two 50-meter pools, it is the center of club life in summer.

The most successful department of the club is the water polo department . The men's team competed in the Bundesliga between 1968 and 1980 . After that the club played alternately in the 1st and 2nd league with very successful years in the 1st league. The club is an integral part of German water polo. The team celebrated its greatest success in 1966 when SV Poseidon became German runner-up.

Since the 1970s, the first team played mostly in the then second-rate Regionalliga Nord, later the second Bundesliga (DWL II), which was dissolved again. In the 2007/2008 season, the club's water polo team became champions and cup winners in the 2nd North Water Polo League. Then he was promoted to the German Water Polo League , the highest German league. The club played here in the 2008/2009 and 2010/2011 seasons and again since 2016.
