The SV Weiden (completely: swimming club Weiden 1921 eV ) is a sports club from Weiden in the Upper Palatinate , which has become known as the water polo Bundesliga team and also has a large swimming department . The club played in the German Water Polo League until the 2015/16 season . The club also has an ice sports department .

society

The SVW was founded in 1921. Around 5000 members belong to the association. The SV Weiden is located in the club's own Schätzlerbad, which offers leisure opportunities on an area of 17 hectares. In addition to the 50-meter sports pool, there is a wave pool and a non-swimmer pool as well as a natural swimming pond and a boat pond. There is also a sports field and a children's playground. The associated restaurant is open all year round. The pool was named after Hans Schätzler (1891–1943), who, as chairman of the association at the time and personal guarantor for the necessary credit, had made a special contribution to the building of the pool.

Water polo

history

In the recent history of the water polo department, SV Weiden had to start over in the lowest division. In 1994 the club withdrew its water polo team, which at that time had played in the Regionalliga Süd, from playing for personnel reasons. The SVW had neglected its youth work so much that it was not guaranteed to have enough players in the following seasons.

The rebuilding was initiated through youth work. In 2001, under the direction of youth coach Sigi Luczak, Michael Schuster and department head Irek Luczak, the Weiden team registered their new team to play in the Bayern Association, where they started with a team whose average age was under 16 years. In the first year he was promoted from the fifth-highest division to the Oberliga Bayern, and a year later he returned to the Regionalliga Süd. From 2002 to 2005 the SVW stayed in the league before Weiden qualified second for the promotion round to the 2nd division. In this round, the SVW reached the third of five places, but thanks to the withdrawal of Eintracht Braunschweig, the promotion succeeded.

After the abolition of the single-track 2nd Bundesliga, the 2006/07 season continued in the 2nd South League. Weiden took second place there. Because the SC Neustadt / Weinstrasse waived, the SVW moved into the promotion round to the 1st Bundesliga, in which the promotion to the top division succeeded.

In 2007, for the first time in modern history, a second representation of the swimming club in the Oberliga Bayern started and managed, just like the first team seven years earlier, direct promotion and thus played in the second water polo from the 2008/2009 season -Liga Süd. SV Weiden is represented once in each of the two highest divisions in Germany.

In the 2009/10 season, the DWL team made it into the play-offs of the 1st German Water Polo League for the first time in the club's history and almost sensationally. As third of the main round B you could beat the sixth of the main round A and reigning semi-final participant SG Neukölln Berlin with 3: 1 after games and advance into the top 8 of the German water polo in the pre-play-offs. After two defeats in the play-off quarter-finals against Bayer Uerdingen, they ended up with a strong sixth place, to which the team also owed their participation in the 2010/11 European Cup (see below).

In 2010/11, the SV started in the main round A of the 1st German Water Polo League (i.e. the top 8 in Germany) and again managed to take part in the play-offs up to the quarter-finals. The team was able to repeat the sixth place of the previous season

European Cup

The sixth place in the 2009/10 season and the voluntary waiver of Bayer Uerdingen and W98 / Waspo Hannover enabled SV Weiden to start in the European Water Polo Cup for the first time in October 2010. In the first round of the LEN Trophy, the SVW had to face the Montenegrin defending champion VA Cattaro (7:12), France's third FNC Douai (5:12), the Ukrainian runner-up Ilycheviets Mariupol (8:14) and Serbia's VK Zac (2:14) are beaten. Even if this sealed the elimination, the team around coach Irek Luczak made a very good impression on their European debut.
