The 2008/09 season of the German Water Polo League began on November 1, 2008 with the preliminary round and ended with the title defense of Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 with a success in the final over ASC Duisburg . The record champions from Spandau secured their 29th title since 1979. In addition to the Free Swimmers Hanover , SV Brambauer and newcomer Poseidon Hamburg were relegated to the 2nd water polo league .

mode

The games were played according to the round system with preliminary round, main round and qualifying round (each with a first and second leg) as well as the championship round ( play-off finals) and relegation round ( play-down finals) from the beginning of November 2008 to the end of May 2009.

Preliminary round

The game was played in four groups of four or five teams in a simple round with a return leg. The classification was based on the results of the previous year ( group 1 : places 1, 8, 9 and 2nd climbers / group 2 : places 2, 7, 10 and 1st climbers / group 3 : places 3, 6, 11 and 14 as well as group 4 : Places 4, 5, 12, 13 and Brambauer). The first two in each group qualified for the championship round and the rest went on to the promotion round.
