The Wasserball Union Magdeburg eV (also: WUM for short) is a sports club from Magdeburg , which currently plays in the 2nd Eastern Waterpolo League . The competitions take place in the Dynamo swimming pool .
history
The club was founded in 2007 and emerges from the swimming department of SC Magdeburg . Until the end of the 2008/09 season, the Bundesliga team played as SGW WU Magdeburg / SC Magdeburg , since the team takes the starting place of the SCM. The WUM took over the management of the water polo division early. From the 2009/10 season, the WU Magdeburg finally started as an independent club in the DWL . Relegation from DWL followed in 2013, and since then they have been playing in the 2nd East League.
In the 2018/19 season you could win the championship title in the 2nd Water Polo League East.
In addition to the main area of water polo, WUM also offers swimming lessons for children.
Water polo in Magdeburg
Water polo has a great tradition in Magdeburg. Magdeburg was already a stronghold of waterball in the first decade of the 20th century, including the "Magdeburg Swimming Club of 1896". With 8 German championship titles, SC Hellas Magdeburg is the team with the third most championship titles in Germany. Later successes in the GDR by SG Dynamo Magdeburg with 18 water polo championship victories and eight water polo cup victories , so far record title holders in both cases, show the importance of the sport in the city. Further championships were won by SC Aufbau Magdeburg , BSG Aufbau Börde Magdeburg (3 each) and Börde Magdeburg (1). The cup also went twice to the second team of SG Dynamo (when the upper league teams did not take part in the cup) and once to BSG Aufbau Magdeburg .
In 1934 the European water polo championship took place in Magdeburg.
