The 2011/12 season of the German Water Polo League began on October 22, 2011 with the main round and ended with Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 defending their title with a success in the final over ASC Duisburg . The record champions from Spandau secured their 32nd title since 1979. After the withdrawal of SV Würzburg 05 , the newcomer SpVg Laatzen rose again to the 2nd water polo league.

mode

The games were played according to the round system with main round (first and second leg), qualifying round ( best-of-five ) as well as championship round ( play- off final) and relegation round ( play-down final) from mid-October 2011 to early June 2012 .

Main round

The game was played in two groups of eight teams each in a simple round with a return leg. In Group A, which included the top eight teams from the previous season, the first four qualified directly for the play-off finals. The last four of Group A had to go to a qualifying round with the first four teams of Group B. The last four teams of Group B went straight to the play-down finals.

In the qualifying round, the last four participants for the play-off and play-down finals were determined. The last four in Group A met the best four teams in Group B. The four winners also secured a place in Group A for the following season.

Relegated to the 2nd water polo league
(**) The Cologne team, who had been relegated to the sport, complained against the rating of the Laatzen versus Krefeld game, which had failed in the main round. Due to a violation of the competition and implementation regulations of the DSV , the people of Cologne were disadvantaged. After an amicable agreement between the club and the DSV, the cathedral townspeople were assured that they would remain in the upper house. Thereupon seventeen teams started the following season.
