The 2012/13 season of the German Water Polo League began on October 20, 2012 with the main round and ended with the decisive third victory of ASC Duisburg in the fourth game of the final over defending champions and record champions Wasserfreunde Spandau 04 . ASC Duisburg secured its 6th title after 1968. In addition to the Wasserball-Union Magdeburg , SGW Rhenania Cologne / BW Poseidon Cologne and newcomer SGW Rote Erde / SV Brambauer were relegated to the 2nd water polo league .

mode

The games will be played according to the round system with main round (first and second leg), qualifying round ( best-of-five ) as well as championship round ( play-off finals) and relegation round ( play-down finals) from mid-October 2012 to the end of May 2013.

Main round

The game was played in two groups of eight and nine teams in a simple round with a return leg. In Group A, which included the eight best teams from the previous season, the first four qualified directly for the play-off finals. The last four of group A had to go to a qualifying round with the first four teams of group B. For the teams from places 5-8 of group B it went to the play-down finals. Due to the 17-a-side field, the bottom of the B- Group directly into the 2nd water polo league.
