Moritz Schenkel

Moritz Schenkel (born September 4, 1990 in Düsseldorf ) is a German water polo goalkeeper . He is under contract with Waspo 98 Hannover , with whom he became the 2018 Supercup winner, cup winner and German champion. In 2018 he finished 9th with the German national team at the European Championships in Barcelona.

Career

Moritz Schenkel began playing handball at GSG Duisburg in 1996. At the age of twelve he got into water polo through a friend. In 2002 he won his first German youth championship. In the next few years he won this title three more times with SV Bayer Uerdingen 08 .

Schenkel always won at least one medal at the German Youth Championships with all youth teams up to 2009. From 2005 to 2009 he was the captain of the youth and junior national team and took part in the 2008 European Youth Championship in Istanbul and the 2009 European Junior Championship in Chania (Greece). In 2005 he played his first Bundesliga game.

In 2010 he made his first international matches for the men's national team. In the same year he moved to runner-up ASC Duisburg , with whom he won the German water polo cup in 2013 and then became German champion in the German water polo league . In the subsequent World Cup preparation he made it into the national squad for the 2013 World Cup in Barcelona.

In 2014 Moritz Schenkel was voted Duisburg Sportsman of the Year.

After three runner-up titles and a 3rd place with ASC Duisburg at the German water polo championship, the Duisburg-based man finally moved from ASC Duisburg to league competitor Waspo 98 Hannover in October 2017 . In his first season with Lower Saxony he won all national titles with his team.

With these successes in the back, Moritz Schenkel played a strong European Championship and reached 9th place with the German national team. The international press praised Schenkel after the tournament, because with a total of 64 balls held in six games, he reached after his third European Championship participation 2014 and 2016 the highest value among the 32 finalists of these title fights.
