The SG W98 / Waspo Hannover was a syndicate in the water polo Bundesliga and other leagues that existed from 2003 to 2012 and consisted of the traditional swimming clubs Waspo Hannover-Linden and Wasserfreunde 98 Hannover . The parent clubs have become German water polo champions nine times and German water polo cup winners twice .

history

Parent clubs

The SG W98 / Waspo Hannover consisted of two parent clubs:

Waspo Hannover-Linden was created in 1913 under the name "Welle" and later became known as the Free Water Sports Association Hannover-Linden. In 1932 Waspo became German water polo champion in the Workers' Gymnastics and Sports Association . In 1971, the club joined the Kneipp association in Hanover as a department. When the financial collapse of the Kneipp club became apparent in 1980, Waspo became independent again and therefore had to leave the Bundesliga, to which the club was now part, at the Green Table in 1981. In 1982, however, the direct resurgence succeeded.

Waspo Hannover-Linden have won five national titles. In 1993 the association became German champions; In addition, Waspo celebrated the German Cup victories in 1998 and 2003 as well as Supercup wins in 1998 and 2000 with a largely new generation of players.

The successes of Wasserfreunde 98 Hannover go back a long time. In the only Olympic victory of the German water polo players at the Olympic Summer Games in 1928 , two water lovers, Karl Behre and Fritz Gunst, played in the winning team; with Otto Kühne and Heini Atmer two other players were part of the German squad, but they were not used. Fritz Gunst is the most successful water polo player in the club with one Olympic gold medal and two Olympic silver medals. The Wasserfreunde club team won eight German championships in 1921, 1922, 1923, 1927, 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1948, but was no longer represented in a higher class after 1997.

Syndicate

In 2003 the water polo departments merged to form SG W98 / Waspo Hannover, with Waspo bringing the Bundesliga starting place and the entire league team into the community. After a lengthy lean period in sport (both play-offs in the quarter-finals), this came third in the Bundesliga in 2011 and 2012. The team also played in the 2003/2004 season in the then Euro League (now the Champions League ) and in the LEN Trophy in 2005/2006, 2008/2009 and 2011/2012 in the European Cup competitions. The D-youth of the syndicate became German champions in 2005 and 2006.

The syndicate, which only applies to water polo, ended at the beginning of the 2012/2013 season with the complete merger of the two clubs to form the new swimming club water sports fans from 1898 Hanover , which operates under the short form Waspo 98 Hanover .
