With the IX. At the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam , a water polo competition was held. The venue was the Olympic Sports Park.

The twelve teams involved played a knockout tournament , with the USA and Germany having a bye in the first round. After the quarter-finals and the semi-finals, the Olympic champion was determined in the final. At the end there were three more games to determine the winner of the bronze medal. The semi-final losers had to assert themselves in another knockout round against the teams that had lost to the eventual Olympic champion.
