Bacchus (grape variety)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Bacchus: grape

Bacchus or early Scheurebe is a white wine variety that is a cross between ( Silvaner  x  Riesling ) and Müller-Thurgau . The information provided by the breeder about the parents of the cross has been confirmed by DNA analysis in the meantime. Peter Morio and Bernhard Husfeld bred them at the Geilweilerhof Institute for Vine Breeding in 1933. They were approved in Germany in 1972 when they were entered in the list of varieties . The grape variety is mainly grown in Germany and England . Small stands are also known in Switzerland (1.6 hectares, as of 2007).

Bacchus owes its popularity among winemakers in particular to the fact that - in contrast to Riesling - it is an early-ripening grape variety that reaches a very high degree of ripeness and can therefore also be grown in locations that are largely unsuitable for Riesling. The wines obtained from it are aromatic ( aromas in the wine ) and fruity, but only when the grapes are fully ripe. However, the wines sometimes lack acidity , which is why they are often blended with Müller-Thurgau. She enriches their relatively neutral wines with their fruit and their bouquet - together they are an integral part of the Liebfrauenmilch, which is often not very popular among wine connoisseurs .

Bacchus is a variety of the noble grapevine ( Vitis vinifera ). It has hermaphroditic flowers and is therefore self-fruiting. In viticulture , the economic disadvantage of not having to grow male plants that produce yield is avoided. Valentin Blattner used Bacchus to breed the varieties Birstaler Muskat and Réselle from a cross with Seyval Blanc .

distribution

Leaves and grapes of the Bacchus grape variety

In Germany, 1,732 hectares (= 1.7% of the German vineyard area) were planted with the Bacchus grape variety in 2015 . In 2006 there were still 2,113 hectares of arable land, after 3,126 hectares were surveyed in 1999. The main growing areas are Rheinhessen (565 hectares, as of 2015) and Franconia (733 hectares). The cultivation of this variety is falling sharply in Germany.
