At the XXI. At the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal , a water polo competition was held. The venue was the swimming pool at the Center Claude-Robillard .
competition
In addition to host Canada, the first six teams of the 1975 World Cup (USSR, Hungary, Italy, Cuba, Romania, Federal Republic of Germany) were directly qualified for the Olympic tournament. Since the Soviet team was automatically entitled to participate as defending champions, the seventh-placed Netherlands was allowed to move up. There was also a continental representative from Asia, North America and Australia (Iran, Mexico, Australia). The last starting place went to Yugoslavia, which won a qualifying tournament in West Berlin from April 21 to 24, 1976 .
The two best teams of the three groups of four in the preliminary round then played in the final round for places 1 to 6, the third and fourth teams for places 7 to 12.
