Water polo

At the XXVII. At the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul , a water polo competition was held. The venue was the Jamsil swimming pool.

competition

The 1984 Olympic champions (Yugoslavia) and the hosts (South Korea) were directly qualified for the Olympic tournament, as were the first five teams of the 1986 World Cup (Italy, USSR, USA, Spain, FR Germany). Yugoslavia was also the reigning world champion, which is why the Germans came sixth in the World Cup. The remaining five starting places were determined from May 13 to 21, 1988 at a tournament in Perth ; Hungary, Australia, China, France and Greece prevailed.

The two best teams from both preliminary round groups advanced to the semi-finals. The third and fourth ranked teams played a round for places 5 to 8, the fifth and sixth ranked teams a round for places 9 to 12 (direct encounters in the preliminary round also counted for the final result).
