The Bulgarian Angel Gentschew was deprived of the gold medal like his compatriot Mitko Grablew (class up to 56 kg) because of doping (tested positive for furosemide ). The Bulgarian Weightlifting Association then withdrew its entire team to prevent further doping revelations.

There were five doping cases : the Bulgarians Mitko Grablew (bantamweight) and Angel Gentschew (lightweight), the Spaniard Fernando Mariaca (lightweight) and the Hungarians Kálmán Csengeri (middleweight) and Andor Szanyi (1st heavyweight). After the medal recognition, there was no new award ceremony for the athletes who moved up, who had won their medals in a clean or unsporting way.
