Alexander Borissowitsch Popow ( Russian Александр Борисович Попов ; born November 17, 1959 in Krasnoyarsk ) is a former Soviet weightlifter .

Career

Popov's first appearance was his only World Cup in Moscow in 1983 . He started in the first heavyweight up to 100 kg and finished second behind his compatriot Pawel Kuznetsov . Since both achieved 422.5 kg in a duel, only Popow's higher body weight decided. In the individual medals, Popov was able to win gold in snatching and silver in pushing.

Popow did not take part in any more world championships afterwards, but was able to win several medals at European championships. At the EM 1986 in Karl-Marx-Stadt , he lifted a total of 397.5 kg and was second behind Nicu Vlad with 417.5 kg.

At the European Championships in Cardiff in 1988 , Popow had regained his old form and won silver with 422.5 kg in a duel. Here, too, only the body weight decided the placement. Also in 1988 Popov set his only world record . In the push he managed 242.5 kg in the class up to 100 kg.

With this performance he was clearly to be reckoned among the favorites for the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 , but for unexplained reasons Popow started with 103.45 kg body weight in the 2nd heavyweight up to 110 kg, where his performance of 420.0 kg only for the 5th place was enough. In the 1st heavyweight division, this performance would have meant the silver medal behind Kuznetsov and ahead of Vlad.

After a break of several years from competition, Popov took part in the European Championship in Sofia in 1993, now under the flag of Russia and in the new class up to 108 kg . There he finished third behind Timur Tajmasow and Ronny Weller with 417.5 kg . He was also able to win gold in pushing.

The 1994 European Championship in Sokolov was Popov's last international competition. Although he could not score in the snatch and thus also in the duel, his performance of 220.0 kg in the push was enough for the bronze medal.
