The GDR fencers drew the short straw 4: 9. In the duel for third place they lost to Hungary. In the run-up to the games there had been a change in the team squad. The originally nominated Astrid Heese SC Dynamo Berlin could not officially take part in the competitions for health reasons. For it was Christiane Thoms from SC Empor Rostock-nominated. While the gymnasts in the apparatus finals had nothing to do with the medal decisions except on the uneven bars, they narrowly fought for the bronze medal in the team competition after a dramatic competition. Martina Jentsch from Dresden could not be used due to a foot injury. Accordingly, there was no cancellation result for the squad and every mistake had a direct impact on the ranking. After Dagmar Kersten and Dörte Thümmler fell on the balance beam, the USA squad was able to push past the GDR gymnasts. A poor performance on the ground caused the GDR squad to slip up to fifth place. Thanks to excellent marks on the last device, the uneven bars, where Dagmar Kersten, for example, received 9.975 points, the GDR gymnasts were able to push past the USA squad and surprisingly won the bronze medal with a 0.3 point lead.
