Uwe Gasch

Uwe Gasch (born June 12, 1961 in Leipzig ) is a former rower from the GDR .

Athletic career

The 1.90 m tall Uwe Gasch rowed for the SC DHfK Leipzig . At the Junior World Championships in 1979 he and Steffen Heinemann took second place in the two-man category without a helmsman . In 1981 he rowed with Klaus Büttner , Hans-Peter Koppe and Jens Doberschütz in a four without a helmsman , the boat won the bronze medal at the 1981 World Championships behind the boats from the Soviet Union and Switzerland. In 1982 Gasch was sixth in the world championship with the four without a helmsman . In 1983 he switched to the GDR eighth and won the silver medal behind the New Zealand boat at the World Championships in Duisburg . Gasch missed the 1984 Olympic Games because of the Olympic boycott .

At the 1985 World Championships, Uwe Gasch and Thomas Kessler and helmsman Olaf Gerschau won the bronze medal in two with helmsman behind the Italians and the Romanians. Two years later, Gasch and Carl Ertel took fourth place in the two-man without helmsman at the 1987 World Championships . At the Olympic Games in 1988 Ertel and Gasch finished fifth.

Uwe Gasch won a total of six championship titles from the GDR: in 1981 and 1984 he won with the four without a helmsman, 1983 with the eighth, 1985 and 1987 with the two with a helmsman and 1987 with the two without a helmsman.

Uwe Gasch was married to the Olympic rowing champion Marita Sandig .
