Carl Ertel

Carl Ertel (born October 15, 1959 in Gera ) is a former rower from the GDR .

Athletic career

The 1.94 m tall Carl Ertel rowed for the SC Chemie Halle . At the Junior World Championships in 1977 he took second place with Uwe Kamprath and Olaf Seifert in a two-man team . In 1982 he and Ulf Sauerbrey took second place in the two without a helmsman behind the Norwegian boat at the World Championships in Lucerne . At the 1983 World Championships in Duisburg , Ertel and Sauerbrey won the gold medal. Ertel missed the 1984 Olympic Games because of the Olympic boycott .

At the 1986 World Championships , Ertel achieved fifth place with the GDR eighth . The following year, Ertel and Uwe Gasch took fourth place in a two-man without a helmsman at the 1987 World Championships . At the Olympic Games in 1988 Ertel and Gasch finished fifth.

Carl Ertel won a total of five championship titles of the GDR: 1982, 1983 and 1984 with Ulf Sauerbrey and 1987 with Uwe Gasch in a two-man without a helmsman and in 1987 with Uwe Gasch and Olaf Gerschau in a two-man with a helmsman.

Carl Ertel was married to the swimmer Carmela Schmidt .
