Jean-Christophe André Jérôme Rolland (born July 3, 1968 in Condrieu ) is a former French rower , current President of the World Rowing Federation FISA , and a member of the International Olympic Committee .

Career

Rolland, who rowed for the Aviron Union Nautique de Lyon , started with Michel Andrieux in 1989 . In 1989, as members of the French eighth , the two received the silver medal at the European Championships, which were then held as a youth competition. At the World Rowing Championships in 1989 , the French eighth finished ninth with Rolland. After an eighth place in the four without a helmsman at the 1990 World Rowing Championships , Rolland and Andrieux achieved a fifth place in the two without a helmsman at the 1991 World Championships and thus the first place in the finals. The following year the two finished fourth in their first Olympic participation in Barcelona .

In 1993 , Rolland and Andrieux competed together with Daniel Fauché and Philippe Lot in a four-wheeler without a helmsman and won their first world title in this class. After silver with the four at the 1994 World Championships , the two returned in 1995 in the two without a helmsman and received the bronze medal at the 1995 World Championships . At their second Olympic participation in Atlanta in 1996 , the two French also won bronze.

In 1997 the rowing world championships took place in Aiguebelette . In front of their home crowd, Rolland and Andrieux won the only gold medal for France. After a year break, the two returned to the top of the world in 1999 and won the silver medal at the World Rowing Championships in Canada behind the two Australians Drew Ginn and James Tomkins . Ginn was injured at the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Tomkins took third place with Matthew Long , Andrieux and Rolland won ahead of the boat from the USA. This was the last international medal for the two French, Rolland retired in 2002.

Jean-Christophe Rolland is an engineer by profession and has been a member of the Executive Committee of the International Rowing Federation since 2004. In 2014 he succeeded the Swiss Denis Oswald as President of the World Rowing Association . The International Olympic Committee accepted him as a member at the 2017 IOC Assembly in Lima . Jean-Christophe Rolland is a Knight of the Legion of Honor , Knight of the Ordre national du Mérite and was honored with a gold medal by the French Minister for Sport.
