Jürg Weitnauer

Jürg Weitnauer (born February 14, 1955 ) is a former Swiss rower who was world champion in the four-man class in 1982 .

Athletic career

The 1.86 m tall Weitnauer took part in a double scull in the Junior World Championships in 1971 and 1972 , but only reached the B final, in 1973 he competed in a single and finished fifth. At his first start at the Olympics in 1976 in Montreal , he came eighth with a double scull . In 1977 Weitnauer formed a double scull with Bruno Saile , and the two finished seventh at the 1977 World Championships . In 1978 the two won bronze behind the Norwegians and the British. In the following year, the Norwegians won again at the 1979 World Championships , while the two Swiss came in fifth.

Weitnauer, who started for RC Thalwil , switched from scull rowing to oar rowing together with Saile in 1980 . At the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow, the Swiss four-man star without a helmsman in the line-up of Bruno Saile, Jürg Weitnauer, Hans-Konrad Trümpler and Stefan Netzle . The four Swiss reached the A-final and finished sixth out of twelve participating boats. In the same line-up, the Swiss rowed the silver medal behind the Soviet boat at the 1981 World Championships in Munich . The following year the World Championships were held in Lucerne, Saile, Weitnauer, Trümpler and Netzle won the only gold medal for the hosts ahead of the Soviet four. In 1983 Weitnauer and Saile entered together with helmsman Rolf Stadelmann in two with helmsman and achieved sixth place. At the 1984 Olympic Games , Weitnauer and Saile rowed again with Trümpler and Netzle in an uncontrolled foursome and once again reached the A final. They finished fifth.

At the 1985 World Championships , Weitnauer and Urs Steinemann competed in a double scull and won the bronze medal behind the boats from the GDR and the Soviet Union. The following year, the two finished sixth at the 1986 World Championships . In 1987 Weitnauer reached tenth place at the world championships in a foursome with a helmsman . At his fourth Olympic start in 1988 in Seoul , the Swiss four-man with helmsman also reached the B-final, but did not compete there.
