Robert Espeseth

Robert Douglas Espeseth, Jr. (born October 25, 1953 in Philadelphia ) is a retired American rower . He won an Olympic bronze medal in 1984 and was world champion in 1986.

Life

Robert Espeseth graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1979 and earned an MBA from the University of Illinois .

At the rowing world championships in 1979 , he took fourth place with the four-man with helmsman . After completing his MBA studies, he entered the 1983 World Rowing Championships with the four-man without a helmsman and finished sixth. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he competed with Kevin Still and helmsman Douglas Herland in two with helmsman and won the bronze medal behind the boats from Italy and Romania.

Two years later he competed at the 1986 World Rowing Championships in Nottingham with Ted Swinford , Daniel Lyons and John Riley in a four-man without a helmsman and won the title with a tenth of a second ahead of the boat from the Federal Republic of Germany. In 1987 in Copenhagen, the US four won the bronze medal in the same line-up. In 1988 Espeseth competed at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul with Daniel Lyons and Jon Fish in two with helmsman and finished eleventh.

After his playing career, Espeseth was a rowing coach at the University of Tennessee .
