Barney Williams

Guillermo Barney Williams (born March 13, 1977 in San Martín de los Andes , Argentina ) is a retired Canadian rower .

Athletic career

The 1.93 m tall Williams began rowing in 1992. In 1997 he finished fifth with the Canadian eighth at the U23 World Championships , and in 1998 the boat was seventh. In 1999, he took the Canadian eighth in the rowing world cup .

In 2003 Williams formed a four without a helmsman together with Cameron Baerg , Thomas Herschmiller and Jake Wetzel . This boat won the World Cup in Lucerne in front of the boats from Italy and Germany. At the World Championships in Milan, the Canadians lost to the German foursome in the semifinals, and in the final the Canadians won the gold medal ahead of the British and the Germans.

In 2004 the four Canadians won the World Cup in Munich, but lost to the US foursome in Lucerne. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, the Canadians won the first semi-final, the British won the second semi-final. In the Olympic final, the British won eight hundredths of a second ahead of the Canadians, three seconds behind the Italians won the bronze medal.

In 2005, Baerg and Williams switched to the Canadian eighth, who finished seventh at the World Championships in Gifu . In 2006 Williams rowed in the Canadian four without a helmsman and finished eighth at the World Championships in Eton .

2005 and 2006 won Barney Williams by boat of the University of Oxford in the Boat Race . Williams is married to the rower Buffy-Lynne Williams .
