The Magos dam ( Portuguese Barragem de Magos ) is located in the Alentejo region of Portugal in the Santarém district . It dams the Magos , a left (southern) tributary of the Tejo, to a reservoir. The small town of Salvaterra de Magos is about a kilometer west of the dam.
The project to build the dam began in 1933. The construction was completed in 1938. The dam is used for irrigation. It is owned by the Associação de Regantes e Beneficiários do Vale do Sorraia .
Barrier structure
The barrier structure is a dam with a height of 17 m above the foundation level (15 m above the river bed). The top of the dam is at a height of 23 m above sea level . The length of the dam crest is 400 m and its width 5 m. The volume of the dam is 73,000 m³.
The dam has both a bottom outlet and a flood relief . A maximum of 1 m³ / s can be discharged via the bottom outlet, a maximum of 110 m³ / s can be discharged via the flood discharge. The design flood is 110 m³ / s;
Reservoir
With the normal storage target of 19.02 m (maximum 21.5 m at high water), the reservoir extends over an area of around 0.9 km² and holds 3.384 million m³ of water - 3 million m³ of this can be used. The minimum storage target is 8.2 m.
