Michał Szpakowski (born April 23, 1989 in Toruń , Poland ) is a Polish rower .

Career

Szpakowski started rowing in 2004. Two years later he started at the Junior World Championships in Amsterdam and finished sixth in the four-man team . In the following season 2007, in which he still belonged to the junior class U19, he rowed to 8th place in the four-man class at the world championships . A transitional year in the U23 area followed, in which he won a bronze medal with the Polish junior eighth at the world championships.

From 2009 Szpakowski was able to establish himself in the Polish eighth of the open age group and subsequently won several European Championship medals and titles. At the European Championships in Belarus in 2009 , the team became European champions for the first time, followed by an EM silver medal in 2010 . The Polish eighth also won the European title fights in 2011 and 2012 with Szpakowski on board. At the world championships they were not that successful and finished fourth in the 2009 championships in Poznan, eighth in 2010 and another fifth in the pre-Olympic season 2011 . Szpakowski was able to take part in the Summer Olympics for the first time in 2012 as a regular in eighth place . In London, however, the team with Marcin Brzeziński , Piotr Juszczak , Mikołaj Burda , Piotr Hojka , Zbigniew Schodowski , Michał Szpakowski, Krystian Aranowski , Rafał Hejmej and helmsman Daniel Trojanowski missed the final and took 7th place.

Even after the games in Great Britain, Szpakowski continued his career in the Polish eighth. At the 2013 European Championships , he achieved silver. At the 2014 World Championships , Szpakowski also won his first World Championship medal with third place. With three fourth places at the 2013 World Championships and the 2014 and 2015 European Championships , the Polish eighth narrowly missed further medal placements. The 2015 World Rowing Championships on the French Lac d'Aiguebelette were disappointing , where the team from Poland with Szpakowski only achieved 8th place and missed direct qualification for the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. After qualifying in Lucerne in May 2016, the Polish eighth finished fifth at the 2016 Olympic Games .

In May 2017, the Polish eighth with Szapowski won the silver medal at the European Championships 2017 behind the Germans . In 2018, Szpakowski did not reach the finals in eighth at the European Championships or in the four without a helmsman at the World Championships. In 2019, the Polish four-man without a helmsman with Mikołaj Burda, Mateusz Wilangowski , Marcin Brzeziński and Michał Szpakowski won the World Cup opener in Plovdiv. At the 2019 European Championships , the crew won silver behind the British boat. Three months later, the Poles won the 2019 World Championships ahead of the Romanians and the British.

Szpakowski starts for the Zawisza Bydgoszcz club . At a height of 1.96 m, his competition weight is around 99 kg.
