Rafał Dominik Hejmej (born July 15, 1980 in Bydgoszcz , Poland ) is a Polish rower .

Career

Hejmej started rowing in 1995 and started two years later with a double start at the Junior World Championships in Hazewinkel . In the U19 eight he finished fifth and in the U19 four without the seventh place. The following year he also won a silver medal in a four-man without a helmsman at the Junior World Championships in Linz. After advancing to the senior age group, Hejmej started in 1999 and 2000 at the Nations Cup , the then unofficial world championships for the U23 age group, and finished 6th and 5th.

From 2001 onwards, Hejmej was able to offer himself for the Polish men's eighth by his first participation in the Rowing World Cup in a four-man without. In the Olympic cycle of Athens, he took part in the 2001 World Championships in Lucerne and in Seville in 2002 in this boat class, reaching the B final in each case. At the 2003 World Championships in the year before the Olympic Games, he slipped out of eight and instead started in a two-man without a helmsman . With Piotr Basta , however, it was only enough to win the D final and thus to 19th place overall. At the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Hejmej rowed again in the Polish eighth with Bogdan Zalewski , Piotr Buchalski , Mikołaj Burda , Dariusz Nowak , Wojciech Gutorski , Sebastian Kosiorek , Michał Stawowski and helmsman Daniel Trojanowski . The team could not reach the final and finished 8th overall.

In the four years before the Beijing Games, the Polish eighth with Hejmej was able to regularly place in the A-final of the World Championships. At the 2005 World Championships in Japan, 5th place, the following year at the Rowing World Championships in Eton, 6th place. In Munich 2007 , another fifth place followed, and Hejmej and the Polish eighth achieved first with the silver medal at the re-introduced European Championships in Poznan Podium placement. The qualification for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing also succeeded. In London, however, the team with Marcin Brzeziński, Piotr Juszczak , Mikołaj Burda, Piotr Hojka , Zbigniew Schodowski , Michał Szpakowski , Krystian Aranowski , Hejmej and helmsman Daniel Trojanowski missed the final and took 7th place.

Hejmej initially remained loyal to rowing and the Polish eighth, at the first European championships in the new Olympic cycle he won the silver medal. The World Championships in the same year finished the team in fourth place behind the selections from Great Britain, Germany and the United States. Hejmej had to leave eighth place for the 2014 season, so he missed the 2014 World Cup bronze medal in Amsterdam. Instead, he rowed in the four without a helmsman at the European Championships in 2014 and 2015, as well as at the World Championships in 2014, to back places. In the end , it was no longer used at the 2015 World Cup .

Hejmej starts for the Zawisza Bydgoszcz club in his hometown. At a height of 1.88 m, his competition weight is around 89 kg.
