Hazewinkel is an artificially created lake in the Heindonk district of the Belgian municipality of Willebroek . Today it is mainly used as a regatta course for canoeing and rowing as well as for leisure activities.
description
The construction of the regatta course was planned from around 1969 and then implemented quickly. The route was opened on May 29, 1975. The reason for the construction was the desire to make a rowing and canoeing facility with Olympic standards available in Belgium. Clay pits near the route were filled with the excavated earth. On the same area, which covers a total area of around 300 hectares, a second lake was created north of Hazewinkel, which is called "Bocht" and is mainly used by smaller sailing boats.
Hazewinkel has typical dimensions for a rowing and canoeing course. The lake has an elongated shape with a length of just over 2 kilometers. The south bank runs completely parallel to the route, while some bays have been created on the north bank. The route is surrounded by footpaths and bike paths.
Regatta course
There is a regatta course on Lake Hazewinkel that is suitable for international rowing and canoeing competitions. With eight lanes separated by an Albano system , a launch system and sufficient space for general regatta traffic, the course is classified in the best possible "Category A" by the World Rowing Association . At the Ostend in the finish area of the route there is a building suitable for events with a target tower, boathouses and jetties, some accommodation and seminar rooms. The facility is operated by the Flemish sports authority “ Bloso ” and is also known as “Bloso-centrum Willebroek Hazewinkel”.
Several water sports clubs have also built their boathouses on the lake, such as the trim and rowing club Toss Hazewinkel 80 (TRT) and the Antwerp Rowing Association Sculling (ARV). In addition to rowing, canoeing, sailing and windsurfing are practiced on the water.
