Duvall pike
Duvall Young Hecht (born April 23, 1930 in Los Angeles ) is a former American rower and Olympic champion.
James Fifer and Duvall Hecht took part in the 1952 Olympic Games with helmsman James Beggs . They won the third run in the boat class two with helmsman , took fourth place in the second semifinals and were eliminated in the hope race against the later winners of the silver medal from Germany.
Four years later, the 1.86 m tall Fifer and the 1.88 m tall Pike competed in two without a helmsman . The two were able to prevail in the US trials against the 1952 Olympic champions Thomas Price and Charles Logg . At the Olympic Games in 1956, Fifer and Hecht won the preliminary and semi-finals by over ten seconds each. In the final, the two Americans won the gold medal eight and a half seconds ahead of the Soviet two.
Hecht graduated from Stanford University in 1952 and then joined the US Navy . After completing his military service, he returned to Stanford and completed his Master of Arts in journalism in 1960 . In 1975 he founded Books on Tape , which lent audio books for cassette recorders to schools and libraries. Hecht later sold this company to Random House .
In addition to and after his professional career, Hecht worked as a rowing coach at the University of California, Irvine and the University of California, Los Angeles .
