Dieter Bender (rower)
Dieter Bender (born May 20, 1940 in Greiz ) is a former German rower . In 1962 he became world champion in two without a helmsman .
Bender rowed for the Neptun Konstanz rowing club . At the Rowing World Championships in Lucerne in 1962 , he and Günther Zumkeller won the first world championship title in two without a helmsman, after they had already won the title at the European Rowing Championships in Prague in 1961 the year before . At the European Rowing Championships in Copenhagen in 1963 , the two won the silver medal behind the Italian boat.
From 1961 to 1963, Zumkeller and Bender won the German championship title in two without a helmsman three times in a row. After the two finished only third in 1964, they could not qualify for the Olympic regatta ; Bender was nominated as a substitute rower, but was not used.
