Werner Klatt

Werner Klatt (born December 21, 1948 in Schönberg ) is a former rower from the German Democratic Republic who won an Olympic gold medal with an eighth in 1976 .

Life

Werner Klatt was discovered by Karl Lorke, the head coach of ASK Vorwärts Rostock , during the cucumber harvest in Schönberg. In 1969, together with Karl-Heinz Prudöhl , Peter Gorny and Bernd Meerbach, he won the GDR championship in the four without a helmsman . At the European Championships in Klagenfurt, the four received the bronze medal. In 1970 Klatt and Gorny won the world championship title in two without a helmsman in Canada . In 1971 the GDR championship and victory at the European Championships in Copenhagen followed. After an injury to Peter Gorny, the reigning world and European champions did not qualify for the Olympic Games in Munich. After the 1972 season, Gorny ended his career.

Werner Klatt moved to eighth for the rest of his career and won the GDR championships in 1973, 1974 and 1975. In 1973 Heinrich Mederow , Detlef Lamm , Friedrich-Wilhelm Ulrich , Andreas Decker , Stefan Semmler , Bernd Landvoigt , Karl-Heinz Prudöhl, Werner Klatt and helmsman Karl-Heinz Danielowski also won the European Championships in Moscow. After finishing fourth at the 1974 World Championships, the GDR eighth in 1975 in Nottingham won the world championship title in the line-up of Karl-Heinz Prudöhl, Ulrich Karnatz , Roland Kostulski , Werner Klatt, Friedrich-Wilhelm Ulrich, Dieter Wendisch , Gottfried Döhn , Jürgen Arndt and Steuermann Klaus-Dieter Ludwig .

At the end of his career, Werner Klatt won the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal with the East German eight .
