Peter Thiede
Peter Thiede (born February 13, 1968 in Ueckermünde ) was the helmsman of the Germany eight from 1993 to 2008 . He was world champion three times and took part in the Olympic Games for the fourth time in 2008.
Peter Thiede started his career at ASK Vorwärts Rostock . At the age of 19 he drove the GDR eighth for World Championship silver in 1987 behind the US eight. In 1989 the GDR eight won silver again, this time behind the West German eight with helmsman Manfred Klein , followed by bronze in 1990 at the last major appearance of the GDR national rowing team. As a member of the ASK successor organization ORC Rostock , Thiede sat in two with a helmsman at the 1992 Olympic Games . Together with his club mates Michael Peter and Thomas Woddow , Thiede was able to take fourth place in this race.
After the Olympic Games, Manfred Klein ended his 20-year career and Peter Thiede took over from Klein as the helmsman of the Germany eight. In 1993 and 1995 Thiede, who had meanwhile changed to the rowing club Hansa from 1898 in Dortmund, became world champion and in 1993 he won the Henley Royal Regatta for the first time . At the 1996 Olympic Games , the eighth won silver behind the boat from the Netherlands. In 1998 and 1999 the eighth won the Henley Royal Regatta again, but fell to tenth place at the 1999 World Championships and thus missed the Olympic qualification for Sydney 2000. Thiede was also involved in the reconstruction, in 2001 the eighth won the bronze medal, in 2002 it was silver. At the 2004 Olympic Games , the Germany eight just missed the medal ranks with fourth place. In 2005 Thiede drove the eighth for the fourth time to win in Henley. In 2006, after eleven years, he won the world championship again. At the Olympic Games in Beijing, Thiede retired early with a new team with last places in the pre-run and hope run after the German Rowing Association dissolved the world championship eighth in 2006 under controversial circumstances.
The 1.67 meter tall Peter Thiede is a soldier and lives in Herdecke. At the beginning of 2009, Thiede ended his career. He took over as coach of the U23 team at the Federal Rowing Center in Dortmund .
